Stepping Stones Montessori in East Lansing (SSMEL), is an established Midwest non-profit, independent school seeking a passionate leader who will: enhance student educational experience, lead experienced classroom guides, build a strong community, and effectively perform administrative and financial functions.
SSMEL serves students from 18 months through 6th grade, and is committed to Montessori education. SSMEL is one of three independent Montessori schools in the area, and benefits from a vibrant community of Montessori Educators. We distinguish ourselves by maintaining a warm, community oriented environment, and promoting social justice & service to our community both inside and outside of the building.
SSMEL was founded 34 years ago as one classroom in a rented space. Since then, the school successfully led a capital campaign and built its own building in 1999. The school now serves around one hundred students, with two toddler, two primary, one lower elementary and one upper elementary classroom. SSMEL recently purchased new land is looking for a leader to guide the school both philosophically and financially as it enters this next phase of growth.
Lead the school in education/pedagogy to ensure Montessori curricula/philosophy. Support classroom guides in the development and implementation of Montessori curriculum and assist them in achieving the mission of the school, including conducting/selecting programs and materials for pedagogical development. Coordinate school programs: enrichment/co-curricular activities (e.g., Art, Music, Language), extracurricular activities, before/after-school programs, and school summer programs. Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, meeting with them monthly, leading committees, etc…
Build a strong montessori community of faculty, staff, families, and institutions, including establishing/maintaining communication with each family, responding promptly and professionally to concerns, and providing constructive solutions to address issues. Be the primary source of communication about the school with parents, faculty, staff, Board members, prospective families, and the community.
Work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to manage school operations by welcoming students and parents, orienting and evaluating faculty and staff; preparing and adhering to the school budget, maintaining finances, ensuring that classrooms are properly staffed to meet legal requirements; ensuring compliance with all state and federal legal requirements and Montessori accreditation.
Requirements/qualifications: Candidates with a minimum of BS/BA in education and/or a Masters in Public Administration are preferred. Previous experience with leadership, operations and community building is highly desired. A candidate who can work collaboratively as part of a diverse team and who has a deep knowledge and understanding of child development is essential. Further, candidates with Montessori certification and experience are valued by the committee. Salary is commensurate with experience.
